What the damage number is, and what it is not
Base damage 37 is read straight from the game's files for this item at item level 3. It is the right figure for comparing weapons: across the sword line it rises 33 → 50 → 132 → 163 → 214 → 248 → 280.
What we do not publish is the number the game prints on the tooltip in a live world. This site briefly did, using a formula fitted to an outside source, and it was wrong — it produced almost the same value for every weapon in a tier ladder, rating a Copper Sword above a Solarite Sword. It has been withdrawn rather than quietly corrected. The full account is on the method page.
